It began in 1994 as a book that two colleagues and I began writing from scrath, using modern lexicographic techniques. When that book was published in 1996, I began working on the unabridged Black's law dictionary (th ed.), again with lawyers that i had trainsd in legal lexicography. We used the 1996 pocket edition as the starting point for that book and added thousands of new entries, which we drafted with an eye to earlier edition of Black's- but we drafted them essentially anew. While adding all these new terms, we inevitably im-proved many of the definition from the earlier pocket edition. The seventh edition appeared in august 1999...
